Why most custom thobe quotes start at 300 pieces — and ours starts at 50
A thobe — also spelled thawb, and called a dishdasha in Oman and Kuwait or a kandura in the UAE — is the ankle-length robe worn by men across the Gulf and by Muslim men worldwide, for daily wear, Friday prayer and Eid.
Look through the thobe listings on the big B2B marketplaces and a pattern shows up quickly. The cheap listings at 1–3 pieces are stock: fixed styles, fixed colours, someone else’s label. The moment you ask for your own cut, your own collar and your own label, the minimum usually jumps to 300–500 pieces a style, and the large export mills quote in thousands.
That leaves a new thobe brand stuck between two bad options: sell a generic stock thobe with a new label sewn in, or commit to a quantity that ties up cash for a whole season.
As a custom thobe manufacturer we take the order from your tech pack at 50 pieces per style and colour, so you can launch two or three cuts in a couple of colours and reorder what sells.
We make every regional cut on this page. If you are building a family or Eid range, the men’s thobes can be cut from the same fabric lot as the women’s abayas and kids’ pieces, which is the part most menswear-only suppliers cannot offer.

What Thobe Brand Founders Struggle With
People starting thobe brands keep running into the same four problems. These are their own words from public threads, and what we do about each one.
| What founders say | How we handle it |
|---|---|
| “I have been researching manufacturers for Emirati Thobes/Kandura … and I have been having a hard time finding this information online.” — r/manufacturing | Every regional cut on this page — Saudi, Emirati kandura, Omani, Qatari, Moroccan and jubba — is made in our own factory from your tech pack. You deal with the factory, not a directory listing. |
| “How much stock (units) to buy at first?” — r/smallbusiness | Our minimum is 50 pieces per style and colour. A typical first drop is two cuts in two colours: 4 × 50 = 200 pieces, instead of the 300–500 pieces per style most custom quotes start at. |
| “Making the first sample was a huge challenge.” — a founder who launched a kandura-inspired brand, r/UAE | A sample in 7–10 days from a confirmed specification, and advice on the construction choices before we cut — for example a traditional tassel-and-bead neck versus a hidden zip, which behave differently depending on the fabric. |
| “The tracking showed it was coming directly out of an ali express warehouse in China.” — a customer on a modest brand she had trusted, r/Hijabis | Muslim shoppers now check whether a brand is reselling marketplace stock. A thobe cut to your own pattern, with your own photos, is the answer to that. OEM designs are written into the agreement as yours alone for 12 months, audit reports are available on request, and we can photograph and film your production run so you can show customers exactly where and how it was made. |
Cotton origin, UFLPA and the “who made it?” question
If you sell into the US, cotton origin is not a marketing detail. Under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA), US Customs can detain cotton garments suspected of containing Xinjiang cotton, and the importer has to prove otherwise. We source cotton from outside Xinjiang and keep the fabric origin traceable, so the paperwork exists before your shipment is at the port, not after.
The same question now comes from your customers. We can photograph and film your production run — cutting, sewing, pressing, final inspection — for your website, TikTok and Instagram, so “who made this?” has a real answer.
Thobe Styles We Manufacture
Thobe, thawb, dishdasha and kandura are regional names for one garment: the men’s thobe. What actually changes between them is the collar, the neckline, the placket and the cut — so tell us which region your customers buy for, and we build to that pattern.
Saudi Thobe
Stand-up two-button collar, a front placket that runs to the chest, and double cuffs made for cufflinks. The most widely sold thobe cut in the US and UK, and the default when a buyer just says “thobe”. Usually white for daily wear, with darker colours for winter.
Emirati Kandura
Collarless round neck with a long tassel (tarboosh) hanging from the neckline, and a straight, clean front with no placket showing. Cut slightly looser than a Saudi thobe. Mostly white, with embroidery kept tone-on-tone around the neck.
Omani Dishdasha
Collarless, with a short tassel (furakha) at the neck and embroidery around the neckline and front opening. Colours are wider than in the Gulf — light blue, grey, lilac and pastels sell as well as white.
Qatari Thobe
Shirt-style collar, a fully buttoned front placket and a chest pocket. Reads as the most “tailored” of the Gulf cuts and pairs well with a structured collar interlining.
Moroccan Thobe & Jubba
Relaxed cut, often with a hood or a round neck, side slits and embroidered or braided trim along the neckline and cuffs. Sold as a thobe or jubba in Western markets and as a jabador or djellaba set at home.
Jubba & Kurta Styles
Longer tunic worn over matching trousers, with a front slit, side pockets and a band or round collar. The format most requested by brands serving South Asian and African customers, and the one most often sold as a two-piece set.
Kids’ thobes are made on a separate, graded block rather than a shrunken adult pattern, and can be matched in colour and fabric to the men’s style for father-and-son sets.
Thobe, Thawb, Dishdasha, Kandura, Jubba — Quick Reference
| Name | Where the name is used | Neckline & collar | What to specify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thobe / thawb | Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Western shops | Stand collar (Saudi) or shirt collar (Qatari) | Collar height, interlining, cufflink or button cuff |
| Kandura | UAE | Collarless, long tassel (tarboosh) | Tassel length and colour, tone-on-tone neck embroidery |
| Dishdasha | Oman, Kuwait, Iraq | Collarless with short tassel (Oman) or collared (Kuwait) | Tassel, neck embroidery, colour range |
| Jubba / jubbah | South Asia, Africa, Morocco, Western shops | Band or round neck, often a front slit | Length, matching trousers, pockets |
| Jabador / djellaba | Morocco | Round neck or hood, braided trim | Hood, trim colour, side slits |
Thobe Fabrics
We work with the fabrics the thobe market already uses. The choice mostly comes down to climate, price point and how your customer washes the garment. One thing to check on every white thobe is opacity: look at the finished sample in daylight, not the swatch in your hand.
Spun Polyester (“Japanese”)
The everyday thobe fabric across the Gulf: smooth, slightly crisp, easy to wash and slow to wrinkle. Sold under names like “Japanese” or Toyobo-style. Opaque in white at standard weights, which is why it dominates daily-wear ranges.
TR Blend (Polyester-Viscose)
Softer hand and a little more drape than pure polyester, with most of its easy care. A common upgrade for brands that want a premium feel without the wrinkling of cotton.
Cotton
Breathable and comfortable in heat, with a natural matte look. Wrinkles more and needs a heavier weight to stay opaque in white — check this on the sample, not the swatch.
Cotton-Polyester Blend
The practical middle: cotton comfort with less shrinkage and easier ironing. Popular for kids’ thobes and for everyday ranges that get washed often.
Linen & Linen Blend
Summer and resort thobes with a relaxed, textured look. Best suited to Moroccan, jubba and casual cuts rather than a sharp Saudi collar.
Wool Blend & Brushed Fabrics
Heavier, warmer fabrics for winter thobes in darker colours — navy, charcoal, brown, olive. A seasonal line that sells in the UK, Northern Europe and the cooler Gulf months.
What You Can Customise on a Thobe
A thobe looks simple, so small details carry the brand. These are the choices that make one thobe read differently from the next.
Saudi two-button stand, Qatari shirt collar, collarless round neck, band or mandarin. The collar is what customers read first, so it is where most brands differ.
Tarboosh or furakha tassel, embroidered neck, and a hidden or visible placket.
Cufflink double cuff for occasion thobes, single button cuff, or a plain sleeve.
Chest pocket, side-seam pockets, and a hidden phone pocket.
Ankle length, slim or classic cut, graded to your own size chart.
Big-and-tall grading built from your size chart, not a standard block stretched.
Tone-on-tone neck and cuff, contrast trim, or your logo.
White, off-white, seasonal colours, or Pantone matching.
Matching trousers for jubba and kurta styles, and father-and-son sets.
Woven neck label, care label, hang tag and custom packaging.
OEM, ODM & Private Label for Thobes
Three ways to launch a thobe line, depending on whether you already have your own cut.
| OEM — Your Tech Pack | ODM — Start From a Base Cut | Private Label | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you bring | A tech pack, or a reference garment with photos | A choice of one of the regional cuts on this page | Your labels and packaging |
| What we make | The thobe to your pattern, fabric, trims and labels | A base cut with your fabric, collar, cuff, colour and embroidery | A proven base style under your label |
| First sample | Made to your tech pack; 7–10 days once the pattern is set | The faster way to a first sample: 7–10 days | Label artwork only |
| Design ownership | Yours; not sold to anyone else for 12 months from your first order, in writing | Your changes are yours; the base cut stays in our range | Shared base style |
| Best for | Brands with their own cut and fit | Brands without a tech pack yet | Testing whether your customers buy thobes before you invest in a pattern |
What to Put in a Thobe Tech Pack
Most delays on a first thobe order come from a tech pack that leaves the details a factory has to guess. These are the points worth specifying before you ask for a sample.
Collar & Placket
Collar type and height, interlining (soft or firm), placket length and button count, and whether buttons are visible or hidden. On a Saudi or Qatari cut this is what the customer notices first, and it is where two samples from two factories look most different.
Length & Size Chart
Thobes are often sold by length, so give the back length for each size, not just S–XXL. Add chest, sleeve length and cuff width. If your customers wear the thobe at the ankle, say so; an inch either way changes how it hangs.
Fabric, Colour & Opacity
Fabric type and weight, the exact white (optic, natural or off-white), and whether the white has to be fully opaque. Name the trims too: button type, tassel colour, thread colour for tone-on-tone embroidery.
Every order goes through our standard final inspection at AQL 2.5, with defect thresholds agreed in writing before production begins. If you need a third-party inspection for your market or your buyer, we schedule it into the production calendar before the run starts.
What Thobe Customers Complain About
Before you pick a factory, it helps to read what the people who wear thobes say about the ones they buy. A few recurring themes from buyers on Reddit, and how each one turns into a line in your tech pack:
| What customers say | What it tells a thobe brand |
|---|---|
| “I’ve visited several tailors but haven’t been satisfied with the quality of the thobes.” — r/Riyadh | Quality is judged on the collar, the placket and how the fabric sits after washing. Specify collar interlining, button type and fabric weight rather than leaving them to the factory. |
| “I’d rather have a tailored one for a good fit.” — r/Riyadh | Ready-made thobes lose customers on fit. Grade by back length as well as chest, and offer more length options than a standard S–XXL. |
| “Most are imported.” — on US shops selling good-quality thobes, r/Muslim | US buyers are already used to imported thobes. What they notice is the brand, the fit and the consistency from one order to the next — which is why the approved sample should be kept and matched on every reorder. |
| “I’m looking for thobes in a creamish white color.” — r/qatar | “White” is not one colour. Name the exact shade — optic, natural or cream — and approve it on a physical swatch before bulk. |
How a Custom Thobe Order Runs
Six stages, from your tech pack to your warehouse.
Send your tech pack or a reference thobe with photos, the regional style, your market and your target delivery date. We come back with fabric options and a quote.
A sample in 7–10 days from confirmed specification. If we are developing the pattern from scratch, allow 2–4 weeks before it ships. Check the collar, the length and the white in daylight.
Quantities, sizes, colours and price fixed in a written agreement. 30% deposit starts production, 70% before shipment.
Production time depends on style, embroidery and quantity, and is confirmed on your quotation. Final AQL 2.5 inspection before packing, with photos sent to you.
DDP door to door with duty included, or FOB and CIF with your own forwarder. Commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin included.
Your pattern and approved sample are kept on file, so a reorder skips pattern development and is matched against the physical approved sample.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who Orders Custom Thobes From Us
Menswear & thobe brands
Online brands selling men’s thobes under their own label, usually launching with two or three cuts in a few colours. Priority: their own fit and collar, a consistent white, and small enough runs to reorder what sells.
Eid & family collections
Modest fashion brands adding men’s and boys’ thobes to a women’s Eid range. Priority: one fabric and colour lot across the whole family set, and a delivery date that lands before Eid.
Islamic stores & wholesalers
Shops and distributors that buy thobe wholesale year-round alongside abayas and prayer wear. Priority: steady unit cost, identical reorders, and one supplier for men’s and women’s lines.
Factory-Direct vs Trading Company for Thobes
Most thobe “suppliers” you will find on B2B marketplaces are trading companies listing stock styles from several workshops. That works for a generic thobe with a label sewn in. It works less well for your own cut, where the second order has to match the first.
| What you are comparing | ModestRise — Factory | Trading company / agent |
|---|---|---|
| Who makes the thobe | We do, on our own lines | A third-party workshop they do not control |
| Custom cut from your tech pack | From 50 pieces per style and colour | Often 300–500 pieces, or stock styles only |
| Who you speak to | A merchandiser who works next to production | A salesperson who relays your question |
| Cost structure | No intermediary margin | Typically 8–20% added on top, undisclosed |
| Reorder consistency | Pattern and approved sample kept against your account | May come from a different workshop next time |
| Men’s and women’s in one order | Thobes, abayas and kids’ pieces from one factory and one fabric lot | Usually separate suppliers and separate shipments |
| Design confidentiality | OEM designs yours alone for 12 months, in writing | Hard to guarantee across workshops |
