What Buyers Actually Need From a Modest Activewear Manufacturer

Islamic sportswear sits at the intersection of two demanding product categories: performance activewear and full-coverage modest fashion. A garment that fails on either dimension fails in the market. A sportswear manufacturer strong in one is usually weak in the other. Long sleeves that ride up during a squat, a hijab that slips mid-run, or leggings that become translucent when stretched — any of these will generate returns and one-star reviews regardless of how good the branding looks.

The technical requirements run higher than on standard activewear. Full coverage means more fabric and more seam lines, which is more places for movement to be restricted and heat to build up. Fabric is where it is won or lost: a polyester jersey that looks fine on a hanger traps heat, stops wicking and turns uncomfortable within ten minutes of real exercise. Wicking has to work across the whole surface, sleeve back and hood lining included — areas a standard activewear brand never has to engineer.

As a modest sportswear manufacturer, we run production from our Suzhou facility using performance polyester/spandex, nylon/spandex and technical jersey fabrics. All our sportswear fabrics are tested for stretch recovery, pilling resistance, colour fastness to washing and perspiration, and moisture wicking rate. MOQ is 50 pieces per style and colour combination. OEM from your tech pack, ODM from our base patterns, or private label from stock.

Modest Activewear Styles We Manufacture

Long-Sleeve Gym Set (Top + Leggings)

This is the volume product in modest activewear: a long-sleeve fitted or semi-fitted top with full-length high-waist leggings. Top length is where ranges go wrong. It has to sit below the hip for coverage without restricting the leg, and not bunch where it meets the waistband. That one measurement is what separates a factory that can develop fit from one that can only sew.

Construction: flatlock seams throughout for comfort and flat seam profile. Four-way stretch in both pieces. Waistband is bonded or stitched-and-turned — bonded gives a cleaner finish but cannot be let out; stitched-and-turned is more durable for high-stretch use. Thumb loop at cuff optional. Gusset panel at crotch for movement range.

Typical fabric: 88% polyester / 12% spandex or 80% nylon / 20% spandex, 200–240 g/m² for leggings; 170–200 g/m² for top.

Best for: gym, pilates, yoga and general fitness. UK, EU and Australian modest fashion brands.

Hooded Tracksuit / Jogger Set

A zip-up or pullover hoodie with tapered or straight jogger trousers. It is the most versatile piece in the range — gym in the morning, school sport in the afternoon, casual wear the rest of the week. In Muslim markets it also sells hard at Ramadan, because it layers over prayer clothes and holds warmth in the cooler months.

Construction: French terry or loopback fleece for warmth; technical jersey for lightweight versions. Hoodie lining in performance mesh for ventilation. Adjustable hood drawstring. Jogger with elasticated waist and ankle cuffs. Zip pockets on hoodie standard; jogger side pockets optional.

Typical fabric: 80% cotton / 20% polyester French terry (casual tier) or 88% polyester / 12% spandex technical jersey (sport tier), 250–320 g/m².

Best for: casual and sport market crossover. Strong for UK and EU at-leisure and sportswear brands.

Sports Hijab

A head covering engineered for sport, not adapted from a fashion hijab: light, breathable, no long tail to catch, and it must not slip once the wearer starts moving. We build two constructions — a cap-style jersey hijab that covers the head and tucks under the chin, and an underscarf plus long-drape set for buyers who want more coverage. Both are moisture-wicking, and both have to come out of a full session still dry and odour-free.

Construction: cap hijab: one-piece knit construction with no seam at the crown (reduces pressure points). Face opening shaped to contour without restriction. Drape hijab: lightweight chiffon or jersey panel attached to a cap underscarf. Silicone inner band to prevent slippage on hairline.

Typical fabric: 95% polyester / 5% spandex performance jersey, 110–140 g/m². Drape options in woven chiffon or lightweight jersey.

Best for: standalone sports hijab brands, add-on to gym set collections, school and club sport.

Full-Coverage Running & Outdoor Set

Built for the street, not the studio: a windproof outer layer, optional high-visibility reflective print, and fabric that breathes but still resists weather. What separates it from an indoor gym set is weight, plus wind and light-rain resistance. The category overlaps hard with outdoor sports, and Muslim athletes running roads, cycling and hiking are asking for it more each season.

Construction: outer layer in bonded performance fabric with DWR (durable water repellent) finish. Inner layer moisture-wicking jersey for sweat management. Fitted hood. Reflective print panels on back and sleeves for road safety. Full-length YKK zip on jacket. Running tights with compression panel and reflective trim.

Typical fabric: 94% polyester / 6% spandex bonded knit with DWR, 160–190 g/m²; compression tight in 80% nylon / 20% spandex, 220–250 g/m².

Best for: outdoor and running brands, competitive sport, Muslim athlete market.

Modest Yoga & Pilates Set

Lower-intensity movement asks for different fabric and a different silhouette from high-output gym work. Yoga and pilates buyers buy on softness, stretch, opacity in every position — the downward-dog test is the real one — and a look that holds up in a studio as well as a gym. This sits at the top of the modest activewear price range, and it tends to attract buyers with real brand positioning behind them.

Construction: 4-way stretch with a minimum 50% recovery, so the fabric comes back to shape after a full session rather than staying stretched. Seamless or minimal-seam construction for the studio look. Wide waistband (8–10 cm) for comfort in floor poses, and a longer top hem with an optional tie-back for coverage when the wearer bends forward.

Typical fabric: 92% nylon / 8% spandex or bamboo-blend jersey (premium tier), 200–230 g/m². Buttery-soft finish preferred over performance-textured fabric for this category.

Best for: premium modest fashion brands, yoga studios, wellness and mindfulness-positioned activewear labels.

Colour-Block & Print Activewear

Colour-block panelling or all-over print, cut on our standard gym and tracksuit constructions. Bold colour and print photograph better than anything else in this category — it is the main reason social-media-led modest sportswear brands grow. The difficulty is doing it without breaking coverage. Contrast seams have to land in the right places, or the panelling draws an optical line exactly where the wearer does not want one.

Construction: colour-block panels cut and sewn with flatlock seams in matching or contrasting thread. Print options: sublimation print onto polyester/spandex (all-over), or fabric-level reactive print for natural blends. Panel placement reviewed at pre-production stage.

Typical fabric: sublimation-print 88% polyester / 12% spandex, 200–230 g/m² for gym sets; colour-block panels in same base fabric with separate fabric pieces.

Best for: social media-driven brands, Ramadan and Eid seasonal collections, fashion-forward modest activewear labels.

Wudu-Friendly Activewear (Water-Permeable Construction)

The smallest corner of the range and the hardest to engineer, which is why almost no general activewear factory engineers for it. A wudu-friendly garment lets the wearer perform ablution without taking it off. That means the fabric at the forearms and lower legs has to pass a real volume of water while still behaving like a performance knit everywhere else.

Construction: the mechanism is an engineered mesh structure, not a coating. We use an open-knit nylon/elastane mesh at the forearm and lower-leg panels with a water permeability target of ≥90%, tested by timed water pass-through rather than a visual check. Critically, the panel is a knit structure — a coating or laminated film would block water entirely, so a supplier offering “water-repellent” fabric here has misunderstood the brief. Mesh is placed only where it is needed; the torso and thigh keep the solid performance knit.

Typical fabric: 150–190 g/m² warp-knit power mesh at the permeable panels, 200–240 g/m² solid knit elsewhere, both from the same dye lot so panels match. The sleeve takes a non-elasticated cuff so it can be pushed up the forearm without deforming.

Best for: brands whose buyers pray during the day — gym, school and mosque-adjacent activewear collections. A feature almost no competing factory engineers for.

Fabric Guide — Choosing the Right Performance Fabric

Modest activewear demands more from fabric than standard sportswear because it covers more body surface area — and it is the part of our modest sportswear factory’s work that decides whether a line reorders — and heat and moisture management across a long sleeve is a different engineering challenge from a short-sleeve top. The table below reflects the fabrics we use regularly. We test every fabric for moisture wicking rate, stretch recovery, pilling resistance and colour fastness before confirming it for a production run.

Fabric Composition Weight Key property Best for

Opacity and stretch: a legging fabric that reads solid on the roll can go sheer the moment it is pulled. We test every legging fabric on a model at full stretch in daylight before confirming it, because a swatch will not tell you. If your market needs guaranteed opacity — particularly important in Islamic modest wear — ask for the opacity test certificate with your sample confirmation.

Pilling: low-quality polyester pills within a few washes and is the most common cause of modest activewear returns. We specify fabrics that pass the Martindale pilling test at 20,000 rubs minimum, and we can provide the test certificate on request.

What You Can Customise on a Women's Activewear Range

Colour & Colour-Block Solid dye to Pantone reference or stock colours. Colour-block panelling available — we review panel placement at pre-production stage so seam lines land in coverage-appropriate positions rather than cutting across the hip.
Print Sublimation printing onto polyester/spandex from your artwork file. Digital strike-off for approval before bulk print. All-over print or engineered panel print both available.
Hood Style Pullover hood (no zip), full-zip hood, detachable hood, or no hood. Hood lining in performance mesh for ventilation. Adjustable drawstring as standard. Sports hijab integrated hood option for modest coverage.
Sleeve & Cuff Full length (wrist) as standard. Thumb loop to keep sleeves in place during exercise. Ribbed cuff or flat hem. 3/4 sleeve available for junior and warmer-market versions. Raglan or set-in sleeve depending on desired range of motion.
Waistband High waist (8–10 cm fold-over band) or standard waist (5–6 cm elasticated). Bonded or stitched-and-turned. Internal drawstring for adjustable fit. Wide waistband is standard for leggings — prevents rolling during exercise.
Length & Hem Gym top: hip-length (covers waistband) or thigh-length (extra coverage). Jogger: ankle or 7/8 length. Split hem or side-slit on long tops for ease of movement. Asymmetric hem available.
Size Range Standard: XS–3XL. Extended: to 5XL with adjusted pattern grading. We can apply your own size labels (e.g. 6–22 AU, 4–20 US, 6–24 UK) or use our standard ISO grading.
Branding Woven neck label, silicone or heat-transfer logo, rubberised badge. Care and composition label to your country's legal standard. Hangtag, individual polybag and shipping carton available as a complete branded pack.

OEM vs ODM vs Private Label for a Women's Line

The choice between OEM, ODM and private label matters more in this category than in most, because a modest activewear manufacturer is being asked to do real development work. A squat-proof leggings block is not a stock shape with your logo printed on the waistband.

Private label deserves a straight answer: it is the fastest and cheapest way to test demand, and the weakest position to defend. A stock legging block with your label in it can be ordered by a competitor next month at your specification — because the specification was never proprietary. Run it as a market test, not as the business.

How a Women's Activewear Order Runs

Enquiry Tell us the target style, your fabric preference, colour or print, size range and destination market. You get back fabric options, an indicative price and a sample timeline — usually inside one business day.
Sample We cut a pre-production sample from your specification. Photos and measurements sent first; physical sample ships 7–10 days after spec confirmation. Sample fee credited against first bulk order.
Sample Approval Check fit, fabric handle, colour and construction. One free revision is included. The sample report carries the opacity and stretch recovery test results, so you approve against numbers. Once you sign it off, the specification is locked.
Bulk Production 20–35 days from approval. In-process photos sent at fabric cutting, sewing and QC stages. Final QC report issued before shipping, inspected to AQL 2.5. SGS, Bureau Veritas and Intertek have all inspected on our floor, and third-party inspection can be scheduled into the production calendar if your market or your buyer requires it.
Quality Check Every unit inspected for seam integrity, colour consistency, measurement tolerance, and label placement. Fabric batch tested for pilling resistance and moisture wicking rate. Opacity spot-checked on leggings.
Shipment FOB Shanghai or Ningbo. DDP available: we manage freight, customs clearance and duty payment. One invoice, no surprises at customs.

Why Source Modest Activewear From ModestRise

Fit Development for Muslim Women's Bodies Modest activewear is not standard activewear with longer sleeves. The garment has to cover and move correctly across the full body, including the neck, wrist and ankle — areas most performance brands never engineer for. Our patterns are developed and graded specifically for full-coverage modest sizing, not adapted from standard blocks.
Fabric Performance Testing Every legging and top fabric is tested for opacity while stretched in daylight, plus wicking rate, pilling resistance and colour fastness, before it is approved for production. Test reports come with the order. Skipping this step is how returns are made.
Inclusive Size Range XS–5XL as standard, graded to your market’s size curve. Ask any modest activewear buyer where the range is short and they point at 2XL–5XL. We run the full range as standard rather than treating the larger sizes as a premium add-on.
Low MOQ With Real Flexibility 50 pieces per style and colour is the real minimum — not a figure that changes once sampling starts. You can order 50 pieces of a gym set in olive, 50 in black, and 50 in a print, all as separate SKUs within one production run. Size mix within the 50-piece minimum is flexible.
Print-Ready Production Sublimation printing in-house on polyester/spandex from your artwork file. Digital strike-off for approval before printing. Panel-placement review for colour-block styles before cutting. No third-party print subcontractor — we control quality and lead time on print orders.
Archived Specification Files Every approved sample is archived — fabric batch reference, colour spec, measurements and trim details. Your reorder runs against the physical sample in archive, not a description. This is how colour and sizing stay consistent across seasonal restocks.

Women's Activewear QC — The Four Checks That Matter

Four failures account for most modest activewear returns, and none of them is general workmanship: opacity under stretch, stretch recovery, seam integrity, and shade consistency. Every one is decided by the fabric and construction you approve at sampling — after the goods ship, all four are unfixable.

Opacity under stretch. This is the check that decides whether a modest leggings line survives its first reviews, and it cannot be done on a swatch. A knit opens when it stretches, so a fabric that reads solid on the roll can turn translucent across a thigh in a deep squat. The test has to run on the assembled garment, in the lightest colourway on the order, in daylight, at full stretch.

Stretch recovery and seams are verified against the mill’s test report before cutting and confirmed on the finished garment by an extension-and-release check at the seat and knee. We pull-test the flatlock points that carry load — inner thigh, gusset join, underarm, waistband — to a ≥90 N/50 mm target, with seam elongation within 10% of the fabric’s own.

Shade consistency is why we cut an order from one dye lot where the fabric allows, and why we strike a physical shade band you approve in advance. On set orders, top and bottom are cut from the same lot and packed together. Final inspection runs to AQL 2.5, thresholds agreed in writing. If a lot falls outside the agreed threshold, you choose rework at our cost or a credit — written into our sales agreement, not just stated here — and we never ask for the balance on a failed lot. Images are sent before the balance is due. If a third-party inspection is required by your market or your buyer, we cooperate with the nominated agency and schedule it into the production calendar before the run starts — SGS, Bureau Veritas and Intertek have all inspected on our floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order quantity for custom modest activewear?

50 pieces per style and colour, across the whole muslim activewear range. Three colours of the same gym set is 150 pieces, 50 per colour. How those 50 break down by size is up to you — 5 XS, 10 S, 15 M, 12 L, 8 XL is a perfectly normal split. Sports hijabs carry the same 50-piece minimum, ordered on their own or alongside the set.

Are your leggings opaque when stretched?

Every legging fabric is tested stretched, on a model, in daylight, before we approve it. There is no way round this one — a legging that goes translucent in a squat is not a modest legging, whatever the specification sheet claims. The test result comes with your sample confirmation, and a fabric that fails it does not go into bulk.

Can I order a gym set and a matching sports hijab together?

Yes. Sports hijabs are made here, and we can match the colour and the dye lot to your gym set. Order them together and the shade lines up. Order the hijab months later and you are gambling on dye batches matching. The hijab minimum is 50 pieces, and it can run alongside the set.

How do I send artwork for a sublimation-print activewear set?

Send your artwork as a high-resolution PNG, TIFF or vector file (AI, SVG, PDF) at 150 dpi or higher at the intended print width (usually 150–160 cm). We produce a digital strike-off for your approval before any fabric is printed. One revision is included; additional rounds are charged at cost. Panel placement for print-on-seam styles is reviewed separately. We do not proceed to printing without your written approval of the strike-off.

Do you produce extended sizes (4XL, 5XL)?

Yes. We grade to 5XL on re-graded blocks, not scaled-up smaller patterns — proportions stay correct as the measurements grow. Minimum is 50 pieces per size group: 50 across 4XL and 5XL combined, or 50 per size if you order them separately. Petite-graded versions are available for buyers whose customer base runs smaller than standard Western sizing.

Is DDP (delivered duty paid) shipping available?

Yes. On DDP we handle the whole run: freight booking out of our Suzhou factory, China export clearance, import clearance and duty payment in your country, and delivery to your warehouse. One invoice covers all of it. We run established forwarder lanes into the UK, the EU, Australia, Malaysia and the Middle East. We quote DDP and FOB side by side so you can pick the term that suits your business.

Do you offer exclusivity on modest activewear styles?

Exclusivity on custom modest sportswear is automatic for OEM designs — 12 months from your first order, written into the sales agreement, and we do not produce your design for anyone else. For ODM styles, category or territory exclusivity can be agreed on request, subject to volume. Activewear specifications — fabric composition, seam construction, compression mapping — are easier to copy than a fashion silhouette, so raise this at quotation rather than after the first order.

Do you offer activewear in bamboo or other natural-fibre blends, not just polyester?

Every base we recommend for a gym set is a polyester or nylon/spandex, because that is what wicks moisture and holds shape through hundreds of wash cycles. Softness outranks wicking only in the lower-intensity categories — the Yoga & Pilates Set runs in a bamboo-blend jersey at the premium tier. Tell us which property matters more for your line and we will point you at the right base.
