Why open abaya buyers keep switching suppliers — and what we do differently

Open abayas look simple to make. They aren’t. Drape on an open front depends on three things — fabric weight, how the front edge is finished, and the balance between sleeve and body — and a sample cut in the wrong fabric tells you nothing about any of them. Most open abaya factories take a closed abaya pattern, remove the snap or the zip, and ship the rest unchanged. You get a front hem that curls, sleeves that pull when the wearer moves, and a garment that photographs nothing like your lookbook.

As an open abaya manufacturer, we build each pattern from the front opening outward. The front panel is cut on the bias so it falls naturally on the body. Sleeve width is proportioned to the body width instead of borrowed from a closed block. Hem sweep is graded separately for every size, so the length holds when the garment is worn and not only when it is lying flat on a table. Unsure which length to order? See our abaya size chart. Buyers who have survived one bad open abaya run tend to stay with us. They have already paid for the education.

Two things worth knowing before you sample. First, an open abaya wears and photographs completely differently in chiffon, in Korean crepe and in nida — if you sell through social media or video, sample at least two fabrics before you commit to bulk. Second, the weight at the front edge matters: a plain hem, a rolled edge, a lace trim and a lurex border each make the front fall differently as the garment moves. If you have not specified one, we will flag it at the tech pack stage.

Open Abaya Styles We Manufacture

Every style below can be produced in your fabric choice, your colourway, and with your woven label. Tech pack, reference garment, or a design brief — we work from all three.

Kimono Open Abaya

The kimono abaya is a wide-sleeve, open-front style with a relaxed silhouette. Available in chiffon, Korean crepe, and satin with plain, lace, or lurex edge finish. Best seller for UK, US, and Australian modest fashion brands.

Butterfly Abaya

Dramatic wide sleeves that taper at the wrist, flowing front panels. Chiffon-on-crepe construction standard. High movement — designed for social media and occasion wear markets.

Belted Open Abaya

Open front with a matching or contrast self-tie belt. Available in nida and thick Korean crepe. Structured silhouette — popular in the Gulf and Southeast Asian boutique market.

Cape Open Abaya

This cape abaya uses a layered cape overlay on a slim inner abaya. Two-piece construction from the same fabric lot so colour is consistent. Common in Eid and occasion collections.

Embroidered Open Abaya

Chest-panel, cuff and hem embroidery on open-front styles. Machine and hand-set options. Lead time adds 5–10 days. Popular for premium collections and Ramadan gifting programmes.

Linen & Casual Open Abaya

Relaxed everyday open abaya in linen, cotton-linen blend, and textured crepe. Growing demand from modest wear brands targeting Western markets with a minimal aesthetic.

Which Style Fits Your Market?

Wholesale open abaya styles sell very differently by region and sales channel. Use this as a starting point — we will confirm based on your buyer profile. For bulk pricing across all styles, see our wholesale abaya supplier page.

Those are FOB prices at standard MOQ. Your number moves with fabric and quantity — a chiffon butterfly is not the same quote as a nida belted, even at the same piece count. Not sure which style suits your buyers? Tell us your market in the inquiry form and we will narrow it to two or three instead of sending you the whole list.

Fabric Options

Fabric is the single biggest factor in how an open abaya drapes, photographs and sells. Our standard fabric range for open abaya production:

  • Korean crepe — structured, matte finish, holds shape well. Best for belted and tailored styles.
  • Japanese crepe — lighter than Korean crepe, more movement. Better for warm climates.
  • Chiffon — flowing, transparent. Usually lined with inner slip. Best for butterfly and occasion styles.
  • Nida — opaque, medium weight, easy care. Core fabric for Gulf and Southeast Asian markets.
  • Satin — lustrous, formal. Used for Eid and evening open abayas.
  • Linen blend — textured, breathable. Growing segment for Western modest fashion brands.

Custom fabric sourcing available. Send a swatch or fabric reference and we will match from our mill network.

Open Abaya Customisation Options

  • Woven label, printed label, or heat-transfer label
  • Custom hang tag and polybag with barcode
  • Embroidery: chest panel, cuff, hem, back yoke
  • Lace trim, lurex border, satin edge binding
  • Stone and bead application (hand-set, premium lead time)
  • Custom colour matching to Pantone or physical swatch
  • Inner slip or lining in contrast or matching fabric
  • Pockets (side seam, hidden, or patch)
  • Belt or tie (self-fabric, leather-look, or contrast)
  • Retail gift box, garment bag, or flat-pack retail packaging

OEM, ODM & Private Label for Open Abayas

Three routes into production — choose the one that matches where your brand is. See our abaya manufacturer page for full MOQ and lead time detail.

OEM — Your Design

Send a tech pack, a reference garment, or detailed measurements for your custom open abaya. We develop the pattern, cut the sample, and run the bulk with your label. Full pattern ownership stays with you.

ODM — Modify Our Blocks

Choose a style from our 300+ pattern library, adjust the sleeve, length, embroidery or fabric, and brand it as your own. Faster to sample, lower development cost.

White Label — Ready Designs

Select from finished designs already in production for other buyers, apply your label, and ship. Shortest lead time — no pattern development required.

Open Abaya Collection

Open abaya reference styles — kimono, belted, butterfly and cape cuts. All customisable by fabric, colour and embellishment from 50 pieces.

Quality Control — What We Check on Open-Front Styles

Open abayas fail differently from closed ones. The front opening is unsupported, so fabric weight, edge finish and sleeve-to-body balance show up as drape problems rather than measurable fit faults. Three checks run on every open-front style.

Front Edge Fall

The front panels are checked hanging on a form in the approved fabric, never flat on a table — a hem that measures level flat can curl or flare once the garment is hung. Where the front edge carries weight, such as a rolled hem, lace trim or lurex border, the fall at the bottom corners is checked against the approved sample, because that is where the difference between finishes shows first.

Sleeve-to-Body Balance

On butterfly and cape styles the sleeve is cut continuous with the body panel, so the two have to be balanced against each other rather than graded independently. The garment goes on a form with the arms raised; if the body panel lifts or the front opening distorts, the pattern is re-cut instead of the sleeve being narrowed.

Worn Hem Length

Hem sweep is graded separately for each size. Length is measured on the form rather than flat, because an open-front garment hangs longer at the leading edge than its cut length suggests. A size that measures correct on the table but reads short when worn is the fault buyers report most often on repeat orders.

Every bulk run is inspected against your approved sample — not against a general specification sheet. If the bulk does not match, we fix it before your balance payment falls due. These checks sit on top of our standard final inspection, which runs to AQL 2.5 with defect thresholds agreed in writing before production begins. If a lot falls outside the agreed threshold we remake it or agree a compensation, per the terms confirmed on your order. If a third-party inspection is required by your market or your buyer, we cooperate with the nominated agency and schedule it into the production calendar before the run starts — SGS, Bureau Veritas and Intertek have all inspected on our floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order for open abayas?

50 pieces per style and colour, with sizes mixed freely within the run. There is no separate minimum for mixing styles — each style just needs its own 50 pieces.

Can I order samples before committing to bulk?

Yes. Samples are produced against your spec (tech pack, reference garment, or brief) for a sample fee that is credited against the bulk order. Sample lead time is 7–10 working days.

Do you ship DDP to the UK, US and Gulf?

Yes. DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is available to the US, UK, EU, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Australia and most other markets. Duties and taxes are included in the DDP quote — no surprise charges on delivery.

How do I know which fabric to choose for my open abaya?

Where you sell and what you charge decide it. UK and Australian social-media brands do best in butterfly styles and chiffon, because movement is what sells on video. Gulf boutiques buy nida and Korean crepe — they hold their shape and sell all year. Tell us your market when you enquire and we will push you toward two or three styles rather than hand over the full range.

Can you match a specific colour or fabric from a reference?

Yes — send a physical swatch, a Pantone reference, or a photo. We match within the same fabric type, because the same reference dyed onto nida and onto chiffon gives you two different colours. We confirm what is achievable, and any minimum quantity, before you commit to a sample.

What information do I need to request a quote?

Style reference or description, target fabric, quantity, destination country, and any labelling/packaging requirements. A reference photo is helpful but not required. We respond within 8–12 hours during business hours.

When should I place orders for Eid al-Fitr or Ramadan?

For Eid al-Fitr (typically March or April), the latest safe order date for plain styles is early to mid-February — allow 7–10 days for a sample plus 25–40 days for bulk. Embroidered and Cape styles need an extra 2–3 weeks for embroidery setup. We hold fabric stock for the main Eid fabrics year-round to reduce lead time, but colour-matched runs should be confirmed by February at the latest. Production slots fill faster in Q1 — inquire early.

Do open abaya proportions look right at XL–4XL?

Yes, when graded correctly. Standard plus-size grading scales body width but often leaves hem sweep and sleeve ratio unchanged — the result is a front opening that looks narrow on larger sizes and a butterfly sleeve that pulls at the arm. We grade hem sweep, body width and sleeve proportion independently per size, and verify worn length on a dress form at each size break. If you are targeting a plus-size market, mention it in your brief — we will show you graded flat patterns before we cut the sample.
